Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

All Senior school students have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Year 9 girls can enrol in the Bronze level of the Award. The expeditions take place in the Kent countryside during the Summer term. In Year 10, students can enrol in the Silver Award and the expeditions take them to Bedgebury Forest, Kent and the New Forest National Park. The Gold Level is far more challenging. Year 12 and 13 students can participate in this level; the September 2013 expedition took place in Exmoor National Park and the 2014 expedition in Snowdonia National Park.

Students are prepared for the expeditions with a series of training sessions that include orienteering exercises and route planning using sophisticated map-reading software available in the Resources Centre. In addition to the expedition, other requirements of the award scheme are to complete a period of voluntary service, take part in physical recreation, and to develop a skill.

DofE goes Digital!
Thirty one Year 11 students embarked on their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Practice Expedition. This involved 3 days of self-navigated walks and 2 nights under canvas in the beautiful Kent countryside.  This year, camping techie, Mr Laber and I were joined by camping enthusiast, Mr Whitfield and our ICT director, Mr Nott.
Mr Laber and Mr Nott decided to trial a GPS tracking app called ‘Followmee’. Using the school iPad, and a pupil’s own smartphone, we successfully monitored a group’s progress throughout the expedition.  Of course, this would not replace our traditional check pointing system, as ‘Followmee’ relies on network coverage, but it certainly minimised the use of the minibus when searching for groups. Therefore, this technology has the potential for more Eco friendly and safer expeditions in the future.
We are planning on widening this trial to all the groups for the assessed expedition at Easter. We shall notify parents on the installation of the app onto phones and how parents will be able to track their daughters progress via the ‘Followmee’ website from the comfort if their own homes!!
I would like to say a massive congratulation’s to the girls on a super successful expedition, and a big thank you to Mr Whitfield, Mr Nott and Mr Laber for giving up their weekend to help supervise the girls.
Mrs Lindsay Stevens,  Duke of Edinburgh Supervisor
